Top Shows Coming To Netflix This Year

2017 is shaping up to be another exciting year for Netflix fans as they are getting treated to an exciting line up of shows.

From Science, to Comedy, to Action Heroes, and Sports Betting here are the top shows coming to Netflix this year.

1) One Day at a Time 

This show premiered on January 6. The sitcom is actually based on the 1975 series of the same name. The show follows the story of a Cuban-American family and their misadventures. The head of the family is a separated, military mother who is played by comedienne Justina Machado. She has two children; the eldest child is a bit of an activist and the other is an egomaniac. Her mother, a Cuban born and raised woman, also lives with the family, which completes the household.

2) A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events is based on Lemony Snicket’s book that was adapted for the screen years ago when Jim Carrey portrayed the evil Count Olaf. Netflix decided to give Neil Patrick Harris the coveted Count Olaf role, which got many people excited. The show premiered January 13, which marks the moment these unfortunate events began. The story follows three recently orphaned children who, through a series of unfortunate events, end up under the care of Count Olaf. The Count plots to steal their fortune and does not play coy about his intentions. He is a domineering and overall despicable character, but the Count may have met his match with these three children.

3) Frontier

Frontier stars Jason Momoa in a powerful and historical drama, which premiered January 20. It tells the chaotic struggle that occurred in the North American fur trade industry in the late 18th century. The story is told through many perspectives, which gives the audience an opportunity to study the actions of certain characters through different eyes. The series will explore the delicate relationship between the Native American tribes and Europeans during the time, some of which were on the brink of bloody chaos with every deal.

4) Santa Clarita Diet 

The Santa Clarita diet premiered February 3 and was a refreshing take on the whole zombie phenomenon. It combines drama and dark comedy. The show stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant as a married couple; they are also real estate agents/partners. The two were living a fairly adequate yet mundane life and have a wonderfully odd daughter. The family flips when Barrymore’s character is turned into a zombie.

5) Iron Fist

No one can deny the fact that Netflix has been hitting it out of the ballpark with its Marvel shows. This includes shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The new show joining the ranks is Iron Fist, which is set to premier on March 17. The main character, Iron Fist, will be played by none other than Finn Jones. Rand is tasked with a duty to the people of New York City. He will use his masterful kung-fu skills to protect the innocent and fight crime in the city. He will use his fiery Iron Fist superpower to deal with some of his most powerful opponents.

6) Julie’s Greenroom

Everyone knows Julie Andrews as the woman who brought Mary Poppins to life, but she now stars in Netflix’s new show that premiers March 17. The show is called Julie’s Greenroom, and it is an educational pre-school TV series. She and a vast number of puppets will teach children about the arts. The episodes are going to feature different artists like Alec Baldwin, Joshua Bell, Sara Bareilles, and Carol Burnett, just to name a few.

7) 13 Reasons Why

This show is slated to premier on March 31. It is based on a 2007 novel by Jay Asher. The show will follow Hanna Baker’s life before she committed suicide and what happened afterward. She is a high school student who sent cassettes to classmates explaining why she committed suicide. The tapes reveal that those who received the tape had something to do with her death.

8) Dear White People

Dear White People has already garnered some controversy, even though it is not set to premier until April 28. The comedy is going to explore the lives of a diverse group of college students of color attending a predominately white Ivy League college. The show is going to spotlight some racial tensions that tend to be swept under the rug. It is a timely comedy that is showing some potential. Logan Browning will be playing the lead role along with Brandon P. Bell.

9) Beverly Hills Sports Betting

Big time gambler and sports bettor Jon Price of Beverly Hills showcases what its like to place a million dollars on a single match and the stress that comes with a business where everyday millions of dollars are on the line for you and your clients. After decades of being a reclusive gambler Price has agreed to let the outside world in. It’s a sure bet that it’ll be a big hit when it’s released.

10) The Defenders 

Netflix is set to undertake one of its most ambitious projects with the Defenders. This series will bring all of Netflix’s Marvel heroes under one mantle. This is going to include Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. No one knows when the show is going to premier, but most people are speculating that it will happen sometime in the fall. The superheros are being played by the actors who originally portrayed them. Charlie Cox is playing Daredevil. Kyrsten Ritter is playing Jessica Jones. Mike Colter is Luke Cage, and Finn Jones is Iron Fist.

11) Bill Nye Saves the World

Bill Nye, who is beloved for Bill Nye The Science Guy, will be starring in a new show set to premier on April 21. The show will be an unfiltered talk show and will tackle different concepts from a scientific perspective. Everything from genetically modified foods to climate change will be discussed.
